About Us

Established in 2007, this course has been developed as a partnership between The Polytechnic and Natural Hoof Care Practitioners, to meet an increasing demand in the Horse Industry, to educate and qualify people in the natural care of horses hooves.  This is the only Nationally Accredited Certificate III course available in Australia for Equine Hoofcare Practitioners (Natural Hoof Care).

This course is available to anybody around Australia and internationally.  The initial two week block is delivered in Tasmania.  Students then complete all further studies, assignments and case studies at their own home by flexible delivery.

Our Philosophy

Our students learn the trim philosophy from many instructors. They are encouraged to take from each what works for them in each individual case. As individuals they will develop their own style.

Trimmers are encouraged to acquire as much knowledge as they can, take on board all evidence, research and read, observe and listen, then make the right choices for the horses in their care and their individual circumstances.

“First do no harm….respect the healing powers of nature.”  The trim taught is non-invasive. Not aggressive.  Any trimming performed must not intentionally cause pain.

This course is not just about trimming - 5 important keys to success with equine hoof care – environment, diet, movement, trimming & knowledge.

Measure success by how much the horse likes the trim, the end results, and how much the client likes the service.     “Horses don’t read resumes”

Be respectful and fair.  Remember that everyone has something of value to share. Respect how others see things and keep in mind two people can look at the same thing and see something completely different and neither will necessarily be wrong.

We expect confidentially with clients. However any inhumane actions to equines we expect the correct measures to report it.

There are bound to be heartbreaking moments and humbling times.

Maintain an open and enquiring mind.  Listen to all theories from all experts in their fields – continue to question. Around the corner will be more data and scientific evidence.  Never close your mind or remain static with one form of evidence.

Students develop fine friendships and a network of likeminded people who will support them and rasp their egos back into shape when needed. Our students are fully supported by people who believe in what they do at all times.
